5 Things You Should Stop Doing As A Competitor

Competitions are by no means a laid back experience. Everyone handles stress differently. All of the blood, sweat, and tears you’ve sacrificed make for big emotions. So here are five things you should remember as a competitor when you’re at a big event.

  1. Stop Talking Yourself Out Of Your Abilities
    • Shut your insecurities up. Your insecurities are heightened because you have worked hard for this and you care. You look good and you’re a great dancer. Own it!
  2. Stop Making Your Partner Responsible For Successes And Failures
    • That’s a lot of pressure to put on someone! They are dealing with their own journey (and yes, that’s a lot of pressure already)
  3. Stop Brushing Off Compliments
    • Whether from loved ones or highly venerated officials, chances are the compliments are genuine. So try to take positive feedback with grace. After all, ballroom dancing is classy, right?
  4. Stop Holding Back
    • Whether the expression, the arms, or the dance, go all out. You don’t get points for being “too cool”. Seize the opportunity to be a bigger you and explore the edges of your comfort zone. To make the process easier, be sure to practice full out in your studio to get used to it.
  5. Stop Downplaying The Journey
    • Placing can be fun, but don’t skip out on the things that lead up to it. Progress, feeling, connection to your partner, and crazy mishaps are all part of it. The bruises and lessons of today are the stories of tomorrow, so soak it up.

Follow these five things and watch yourself become happier and more present with each experience. Just like learning a new skill requires time and practice, so too does being a great competitor. So take these to heart and dance on, competitors!
